A 5am alarm, a scalding tea in the dark, the roar of the burners, then silence — and Marrakech drifting gently away beneath your feet as the sun rises over the Atlas. The hot-air balloon flight is the experience our guests at the Riad Mylaya come back from most moved. Here is how it actually works, what it costs, and what to know before booking.
Prices and times quoted are indications checked in September 2026 with Marrakech operators: they vary considerably with the season, promotions and the option chosen, and must be confirmed at booking.
How a flight unfolds, hour by hour
- 5.00-5.30am (seasonal): pick-up at the riad. A 4x4 or minibus collects you at the edge of the Medina — we tell you the exact meeting point, because cars cannot enter our lanes.
- 6.00am: arrival at the launch field, northwest of the city towards the Jbilet hills. Mint tea, coffee, and the show of the balloons inflating in the blue light of dawn.
- 6.30-7.00am: take-off. The flight usually lasts 40 to 60 minutes depending on wind. You fly over the douars, the Oued Tensift valley and the Jbilet hills, and on a clear day the snow-covered Atlas appears on the horizon.
- After landing: Berber breakfast under a caidal tent — eggs, msemen, argan oil, honey, tea — and a flight certificate, often calligraphed in Arabic.
- 9.30-10.30am: back at the riad. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the whole morning.
Options and prices
Every operator offers three levels, with the same flight and different service:
- Classic (shared) flight — 16 to 20 passengers in a large compartmented basket. Roughly 1,400 to 2,400 MAD per person depending on season and operator; seasonal offers sometimes drop to around 1,800 MAD.
- VIP flight — shared balloon, but a private compartment for your group, a steward and fruit juice on board. Expect noticeably more, often about double the classic rate.
- Private flight (Top VIP) — a basket to yourselves, private transport, dedicated pilot and chase crew. Generally 3,900 to 6,800 MAD per person depending on group size.

Weather, season and cancellations
Balloons only fly in light wind, and always at first light, when the air is most stable. October to April is the best period: clear skies, cool air, the Atlas often under snow. In summer flights leave very early and visibility can be reduced by heat haze. From December to February, bring a real jacket: it is 3 to 8°C at take-off.
A flight cancelled for weather is moved to the next day or refunded, depending on the operator's terms — the single most important thing to check before paying. Our advice: book your flight for the second or third day of your stay, never the last morning. That way a postponement does not cost you the experience.
What to plan for
- Clothing — trousers, closed flat shoes (you land on stony ground), a jacket or fleece, a cap. It is not cold in flight, but it is cold on the ground before take-off.
- Camera — with a wrist strap: nothing may fall from the basket. No selfie sticks, banned by most operators.
- Restrictions — children are generally accepted from 6 to 8 years old depending on the operator, provided they can see over the basket; flights are not advised in pregnancy, after recent surgery, or with severe back or knee problems (you stand for an hour). A weight limit may apply: mention it when booking.
- Fear of heights — contrary to expectations, a balloon does not trigger vertigo: there is no vibration, no sense of speed, and the basket is stable. We have seen guests who dread flying love this.
- Tipping — 50 to 100 MAD for the ground crew and pilot is customary if you enjoyed the morning.
Is it worth the price?
It is the most expensive activity we recommend, and we will say it plainly: on a tight budget, a day in the Atlas or a sunset camel ride in Agafay costs three to five times less and is beautiful too. But if you want one spectacular memory of Marrakech — a birthday, a proposal, a first trip to Morocco — the dawn flight has no equivalent. Guests who have done it never talk about it in terms of price.
