Few travellers know it before arriving: Marrakech is one of the most enjoyable golf destinations around the Mediterranean. A dozen courses within twenty minutes, greens playable from September to June, the snow-capped Atlas as a backdrop, and green fees that remain very reasonable next to Spain or Portugal. Several guests at the Riad Mylaya come for exactly that, and sleep in the Medina rather than a resort — the city is ten minutes from the first tees.
The green fees below were taken from club websites in September 2026. They change with the season, tee time and booking channel: always confirm with the club before you go.
The courses, and what they are worth
Royal Golf de Marrakech
The oldest — opened in 1927 by Pasha Thami El Glaoui — and the most historic: Churchill and Eisenhower played here. An 18-hole par 72 of about 5,900 metres under century-old olives and eucalyptus, plus a 9-hole loop. Technical without being punishing, and a pleasure to walk. Published green fee around 1,200 MAD for 18 holes and 700 MAD for 9; a caddie is compulsory, roughly 200 to 300 MAD per caddie for 18 holes, paid in cash. Lower rates circulate through booking platforms. Under fifteen minutes from the Medina.
Amelkis Golf
On the Ourika road, a well-kept resort course planted with palms and olives that regularly hosts competitions. Often the best value in the city. Around 950 MAD for 18 holes and 550 MAD for 9 at the visitor rate; about 350 MAD for juniors under 18; buggy around 400 MAD, bag rental 350 MAD, a 30-ball bucket 20 MAD. A national FRMG rate, around 600 MAD, exists for Moroccan licence holders.
Al Maaden
A Kyle Phillips layout east of the Medina, dotted with contemporary art — the only course in town where you pass monumental sculptures between holes. Wide, strategic, extremely photogenic. Published rates range from roughly 690 MAD (9 holes) to 1,190 MAD (18 holes) in high season, with lower summer and platform rates; buggy around 400 MAD, caddie 250 MAD.
Assoufid Golf Club
Niall Cameron's desert-style course, opened in 2014 on the Guemassa road twenty minutes from the centre: no trees, natural movement, firm fast fairways, and the best Atlas view of any course in the region. The most demanding technically, and the favourite of low handicappers. Around 1,100 MAD for 18 holes and 500 MAD for 9 on the card valid to 30 September 2026, caddie about 250 MAD, cart about 450 MAD. A maximum handicap of 35 applies and a handicap certificate is requested at reception.
The other courses
- Fairmont Royal Palm, on the Amizmiz road: a Cabell Robinson course inside a luxury resort, the most expensive in town (around 1,400 MAD in high season, about 850 MAD in summer), with a forecaddie often compulsory.
- PalmGolf Marrakech (Palmeraie) — a Robert Trent Jones Sr. 18 holes in the historic palm grove, popular with groups.
- Samanah Country Club — a Nicklaus Design layout to the southwest, spacious and quiet.
- Noria Golf Club and Atlas Golf Marrakech — two more accessible courses, perfect for a relaxed round or for improving.
When to play in Marrakech
The Marrakech golf season runs October to May: average highs of 19°C in January, 29°C in May, almost no rain, and a white Atlas on the horizon from December to March. It is also when tee times go fast: book at least a week ahead, two during European school holidays.
In July and August, play early — off before 8am — or late afternoon, take a buggy and drink plenty; in exchange, green fees drop sharply and the courses are empty.
Practical: equipment, caddies, etiquette
- Equipment — every club rents sets (roughly 250 to 400 MAD); no need to fly your clubs out for two rounds. Book rental with the tee time.
- Caddies — widespread and sometimes compulsory. Allow 200 to 300 MAD for 18 holes, in cash, plus a tip for good work. A good caddie reads greens better than any app.
- Handicap — several clubs, Assoufid among them, ask for a handicap certificate. Bring it.
- Dress — polo shirt, shorts or golf trousers, golf shoes: Marrakech clubs are traditional about this.
- Payment — cards work at the clubhouse, but keep cash for the caddie and tips.
- Friday — prayer day, often quieter in early afternoon: a good slot.
A week of golf, and the budget
A sequence that works well for our guests: Assoufid for pure golf, Amelkis or Al Maaden for the value day, Royal Golf for the history, and a fourth course as the mood takes you. Four rounds come to roughly 3,200 to 4,000 MAD in green fees, about €300 to €370, with caddies and buggies on top. Add the journeys: we arrange your private return transport to the course, bags included, leaving in time for your tee time — useful, because early-morning taxis are unreliable for a 7.30am start.
And between rounds?
That is the point of sleeping in the Medina: in the afternoon you are five minutes from the souks, the monuments and the hammam. A one-hour relaxing massage at 470 MAD after 18 holes, a Moroccan dinner on the terrace from €15, and a morning at Bahia Palace on days off.
